What is the B-17 Alliance Foundation?

The B-17 Alliance Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization that provides educational and museum programs to commemorate the men and women who served America in World War II. The Foundation was originally formed in 2004 as Wings of Freedom, Inc., an Oregon nonprofit association. We changed our name to B-17 Alliance Foundation in 2013 to more clearly reflect our mission and to emphasize the educational nature of our work.

The centerpiece of the Foundation’s efforts is an Oregon landmark: the Lacey Lady, a B-17G bomber that served as a gas station canopy from 1947 to 1991 on Highway 99E in Milwaukie. Over the decades, this iconic aircraft slowly deteriorated from weather, pests, and occasional vandalism. Fear of losing this historical artifact - one of very few remaining in the world - prompted efforts to preserve it as the centerpiece of an educational institution. In 1996, the owners began dismantling the aircraft by removing the cockpit for restoration. They also constructed a building near the original site to exhibit a growing collection of artifacts that were donated by veterans and their families.

Thanks to generous financial and volunteer support from the community, today the Lacey Lady resides in a climate-controlled hangar at McNary Field, where restoration efforts continue. Foundation offices and a temporary museum are located nearby at 3278 25th Street SE, Salem, Oregon.

Who runs the Foundation?

The Foundation is governed by an all-volunteer board of directors. Our executive director is Terry Scott. Basic information can be found on the annual report we file with the Oregon Secretary of State.

How is the Foundation funded?

While we actively seek out grant possibilities, the Foundation relies almost entirely on private individual and corporate donations. We recently completed development of a brochure to facilitate pursuit of institutional sponsorships.

How do I make a donation?

Click here or on the “Donate/Store” link above. You will leave our website and be taken via a secure connection to our online store on Square, which processes credit card transactions for us. You can either donate cash or select from a wide variety of items for purchase. Either way, you will be helping us continue our work.

Are donations to the Foundation tax deductible?

The Foundation is recognized as a tax-exempt nonprofit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our federal tax identification number (EIN) is 20-3507294. In most cases, donations to the Foundation will be deductible on your federal tax return, assuming you itemize deductions. Charitable deductions can be subject to limitations; consult your accountant or tax advisor for specific guidance. State tax laws vary; consult your tax advisor as to deductibility on your state tax return.

Is there any way I can help without contributing cash or buying merchandise?

Absolutely! We are always in need of volunteers with a variety of skills. Simply drop us a note from this website and let us know you’re interested. Whatever you like to do, we’re sure to have a job you’ll love doing.

If you don’t have time to volunteer, do you have any World War II memorabilia in your attic or basement? Consider sharing it with the public by donating it to our museum. We’re always on the lookout for unique and interesting items from the war era: photos, magazines, posters, maps, books, uniforms . . . just about anything in reasonably good condition. Not only will you be helping future generations understand an important part of our history, our curatorial staff will ensure your treasures are properly preserved and well protected for years to come. All you need to do is send us a note and let us know what you’d like to donate.

How do I join the Foundation?

We do not offer formal “membership” at this time, but you can easily stay up to date with the Foundation’s activities by adding your name to our mailing list and liking our page on Facebook. We respect your time and privacy. Under no circumstances will we ever sell or share our mailing list. Your email address will only be used to send you occasional updates (no more than one per month) about the Lacey Lady’s progress, the museum build-out, and special events of interest to World War II history buffs.
